Six Nations Police

The Six Nations Police Service polices the Six Nations of the Grand River reserve at Ohsweken. With a current officer complement of 31, the service contains patrol functions, custody, investigations, training, and administration. Of particular concern to the officers is personal safety; security provisions and the design of the building are in response to the desire to balance welcome with security.

Exterior building materials are a combination of natural stone, contrasting with prefinished metal roofing & wall surfaces. Within the sheltered courtyard, the daylighting is maximized to the south and west exposures, with sun controls.

The Six Nations Police building integrates many sustainable design features including rainwater harvesting and a grey water system; on-demand water heaters, high insulation levels, fiberglass window frames, xeriscaping and a vertical loop geothermal heating system. Demand load is reduced by optimizing natural light and orientation, as well as zoning within the building to respond to varying occupancy schedules.
