Halton Children's Aid Society

By renovating a historic home and adding 4000 sq.ft. at the back of the building, the HCAS has been able to meet the space needs of their staff, preserve an important piece of architectural history in south-western Ontario, and generate a positive image in the community for this social services organization.

Although the materials used in the addition are modern, the colours and detailing were selected to create a balance between the aesthetics of the new and the old. Modern light fixtures combine with refinished pine floors and trim to create a warm work environment, and also put visiting children and their parents more at ease. The sensitive nature of the work required visual privacy to be afforded to those visiting the building. By locating the public entrance at the back of the building, adjacent to car parking, the privacy of the visits is achieved.

New systems include air-conditioning, fire alarm, and site services. The ground floor is also now wheelchair accessible.

The project included facilitating the approvals process with the Town of Milton planning and building departments.
