Downtown Milton Floodplain Area

Milton was founded as a mill town, strategically located on Sixteen Mile Creek at the foot of the Niagara Escarpment. The town has grown around the infrastructure of the river, the mill pond, and the lakes upstream. Under the design parameters for flood control administered by the Province, through Conservation Halton and Town of Milton, there are significant challenges to current and future development in the historic downtown. A large portion of the Central Business District is within the Flood Plain. Many properties are underdeveloped.
As the Town thrives and expands on the fringes, the importance of economic activity in the old core grows. Working with the provisions of the Conservation Authorities Act and the Town of Milton’s planning legislation, we continue to seek ways to enable appropriate development to occur in the historic downtown. This work includes challenging the existing provisions by proposing sustainable solutions, as well as creating development while working within the existing restrictions.
