Scotch Block Farm

Front Façade (Original)

This fine Georgian house was built by one of the early settler’s of the Halton area in 1837.

The original home has been left undisturbed since its construction. Subsequent additions to the north of the house are now being removed. The surrounding rural landscape provides the context for locating the new rooms – the path of the sun, public and private space, extended and close views.

The addition reflects the demands of modern life by introducing a garage, courtyard, side (family) entrance, extensive boot room, and allows connections between family room, kitchen, and the original principal rooms.

An upper floor gallery connects the original central staircase to the new master bedroom suite.

The form, mass, and materiality of the original architecture are respected by working with the original scale and mass. Sustainable design elements include wind power, reduction in use of synthetics, and superinsulation values. Total building footprint was also minimized to reduce energy losses.
